It's interesting where we source inspiration. I feel like inspiration is almost inside of us, we just need the right elements or situation to expose it. From what I know of my dads early life, prior to me being born, there wasn't much inspiration, from what I'm told. He was an alcoholic and I do remember some drunken nights, my mom and him separated when I was very little. But he wanted to fix the road he was on and stuck with his sobriety. Life got to him once again and he turned to the bottle for his answers, but this time it got the best of him and he passed away 19 years ago today. ▪︎
But there was good mixed in there and the things that do stand out are the things I've always held to. He inspired a strong work ethic in me from the very beginning. I got early rising from him as he got up every morning at 4am to start his coffee routes. I started working concessions at the Rose Bowl every weekend when I was 13 and he taught me all the ins and outs. I had the place dialed as a teenager and I loved making money. He's also the reason I picked up a camera. He had a passion for photography and he was a master. He was able to see something different and then put it in print. He would always find his own angle, an angle the average photographer wouldn't shoot. I practice all the time and hope to one day find my angle, my style, my inspiration. And lastly, taken from from the bad, he inspired me to not be that dad. He inspired me to be the dad that was there for his wife, but mainly for his kids. He was there, but not the same "there" that I saw all my friends dads doing. I was jealous of that presence, I envied their relationships and I wouldn't want any child to have that same feeling or want.
