  • Henry Blair (1807–1860) was the second African American inventor to receive a patent. His first invention was the Seed-Planter, patented October 14, 1834.
The invention allowed farmers to plant more corn using less labor in a smaller amount of time.
His second invention was a mechanical cotton planter. It worked by splitting the ground with two shovel-like blades which were pulled along by a horse. A wheel-driven cylinder followed behind and dropped the seed into the newly plowed ground. Blair was a successful farmer and developed the inventions to makes his farm more efficient.
Henry Blair was a free man, but he was also illiterate; he signed his patent applications with an ‘X’. #morethanMalcolm

  • Earnest Everett Just was an African-American biologist and educator best known for his pioneering work in the physiology of development, especially in fertilization. Just's primary legacy is his recognition of the fundamental role of the cell surface in the development of organisms. In his work within marine biology, cytology and parthenogenesis, he advocated the study of whole cells under normal conditions, rather than simply breaking them apart in a laboratory setting. Conducting thousands of experiments studying the fertilization of the marine mammal cell, Dr. Just was able to successfully challenge Jaacque Loeb's theory of artificial parthenogenesis in 1922. Using his research conducted at Wood's Hole, Ernest Just published his first book entitled, Basic Methods for Experiments on Eggs of Marine Mammals. Despite his part-time appointment, Ernest Just published over seventy scientific papers during his studies there. #blackhistorymonth #blackhistory365 #blackhistory #unsungheros #imblackeverymonth #imblackandimproud #ernesteverettjust #biologist #imblackyallimblackyallimblackerthanblackandimblackyall #scientist #blackhistoryfact #blackhistoryisnow #blackexcellence
