  • 2/14/1849 — The Valentine ❤️
    .
Sorry I’m late today, Boston. Back-to-back dates can really eat at your time 😉
    .
We’re venturing out of Boston proper this evening with a quick trip to the most romantic place on earth: Worcester, Massachusetts 😍
    .
Why? Today in 1849, Woostah native Esther Howland sold the first valentines in America 💌, thus launching the commercialist component of this lovey-dovey day 🧸
    .
Coming of age in the middle of the 19th century, Esther the Entrepreneur noticed 2️⃣ big trends in America:
1️⃣ Romanticism was on the rise ( #giggity ) and people were starting to be a little more unapologetic about expressing their #feelings
2️⃣ The Industrial Revolution was making paper a hell of a lot easier to get 🏭
    .
“Hm,” said Esther to herself, “I feel like there’s A LOT of money of to be made here.” 💸
    .
Now, importantly, it’s not that Esther Howland herself ~invented~ the art of saying, “Hey I’m into you” on a card ✍️. Love letters were as old as time 💋, and more specifically, western European immigrants had carried over with them to the States the concept of giving your crush a heart 🥰. Elaborate valentines were already very much a thing in jolly old England.
    .
But they weren’t in America, and this is where Esther’s eyes turned to dollar signs 🤑
    .
Just so happening to be the daughter of Worcester’s premier book and stationery proprietor, Howland leveraged her dad to get a hold of the most #EXTRA paper for cheap. We’re talking #lacy and #perforated and #embossed because that was the good-good that could hang tight onto flowers 🌹
    .
By the time she completed her first round of 12 cards in 1849, she had aspired to make $200. Instead, on that initial order, she made $5,000.
    .
    That’s $163,000 in 2019 😵💰💰💰
    .
As a result, the New England Valentine Company was born. Well into the 20th century, it crushed competitors by continuing to crank out all sorts of genres and prices of valentines because Esther Howland believed that everybody should be able to afford a card 🙌
    .
So, whether you’re lucky in love or that person who spent the day awkwardly reminding the rest of the office of how single you are, keep credit where credit is due, folks 😘
