  • There was nothing out of the ordinary about leaving San Francisco at 1:30am to drive four hours out to Yosemite National Park for the second time in a week. Only visible for a couple days every year due to the position of the setting sun, this rare natural phenomenon is only seen when the sky is clear and there has been sufficient rain/melted snow in order for Horsetail Falls to flow. Even when the timing is right the chance of the water not being frozen and the skies being clear, especially during the middle of winter, is minimal. In fact, this was the first day in over three weeks that the skies had been clear. Everything has to align perfectly in order to catch a glimpse of this surreal occurrence. Having had to trek over three miles and then submerge myself waist deep in snow for over an hour the sun started to set and the light began to shift across the East face of El Capitan. Just a couple of minutes before the sun disappeared below the horizon the water ignited and Horsetail Falls became the Yosemite Firefall.
