  • Repost from @vintageethiopia using @RepostRegramApp - Shawa Province
    Addis Ababa, #Ethiopia
    Circa. #1924
    .
A portrait of an Ethiopian woman from the historic Province of Shawa, home of Emperor Menelik the Second (Dagmawi Menelik, Emeye Menelik, Abba Dagnew) from 1924
    .
The Province of Shawa is/was conveniently located in central part of Ethiopia, sitting East-West between Wellega (West) & Hararghe (East), and North-South between Arsi/Sidamo (South) & Gojjam/Wollo (North)
    .
Shawa Province was made up of so many different groups of people. It was a melting pot of all Ethiopian people including of different religious background. During the later 20th century, you could find Catholics (Italians/French), Hindus, Muslims, Orthodox, Anglican-Christians, traditional, even Sikhs, am sure some atheists too
    .
It’s location allowed Shawa to prosper economically. All trades from east-west/north-south, and vice-versa, passed thought Shawa Province
    .
And unlike Provinces in the periphery, such as Hararghe, Wollo, Eritrea, Tigray, Western Welega, and sometimes Western-Gondar, Shawa Province was relatively peaceful because it was away from potential invaders
    .
In fact, many of those looking for peaceful life would flock to Shawa and settle there. For example, during the Emperor Menelik time, many Eritreans settled in Shawa Province
    .
If you ever look through and consider where famine has occurred in Ethiopia, almost 90% occur in the periphery where warfare used to be constant. There were at least 4 devastating famines in recent Ethiopian history: (1)Atse Yohannes’s time/1880s, (2) Atse Menelik’s time/1890s; (3) HIM/70s, and (4) Derg’s time/80s
    .
Nearly all of them occurred on the periphery, where warfare was taking place. Other Province were affected little. In fact, people in Shawa, Sidamo, Arsi, Bale etc barely have seen famine. The land is fertile and they are far far away from the war fronts (border provinces)

  • Repost from @vintageethiopia using @RepostRegramApp - Ras Desta
    Shoa, #Ethiopia
    Circa. #1937
    .
The Patriot Ras Desta Damtew, being led to his execution, by Italians & a collaborator (traitor) who helped in his capture
    .
Ras Desta was brutally executed by the Italians on February 24, 1937
    .
Ras Desta was the commander of the Sidamo Army & later of the southern Patriots. He led his army against Italy’s northwest advance, in the east, from Italian Somaliland
    .
The Italians barely engaged the Ethiopian Patriots. Instead, they would find the location of the Ethiopian army & send in bomber planes to bomb
    .
The Italo-Ethiopian war was the first war where planes were fully utilized in such a large scale war. Italy had the world 3rd largest Air-force at the time
    .
Desta employed deception to avoid detection by Italian Air-force. For most of the war, the Italians had no clue as to where his army was & this prevented them from going forward
    .
One day, they would say his army was spotted in the desert of the Ogaden. A week later a report would come saying he was somewhere near Harar. And other time that he was in Nagele etc. The Italians did not advance until they knew where he was
    .
Occasionally, he would appear out of nowhere catch Italians unprepared & off-guard, destroy them and disappear only to reappear weeks later to do the same
    .
One time, he sent a small contingent of his army north with instruction to let themselves be detected by the Italians while his large army prepared to encircle and destroy Italy’s main army in the area from the rear
    .
By chance, two Italians spy planes spotted two people around where the large army was. The Italians put two and two together and sent hundreds of planes to the location where they bombed the army causing considerable destruction
    .
Desta’s army retreated to regroup but he was captured with the help of a collaborator (traitor) and executed by Italian firing squad
    .
The Italians made the decision to execute him believing that Ethiopians would be shocked and submit, but it made it worse for them as more and more people started joining the patriots
    .
Ethiopians dedicated this day of February 19 to Patriots like him and all victims

  • Jesus Christ is God who came in the flesh to save us and  pay the debt for sin by shedding his sinless blood on the cross and was raised on the third day. Whoever  belives in him shall not perish but have Eternal life.

Acts 3 KJV 19 Repent ye therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times of refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.
20 And he shall send Jesus Christ, which before was preached unto you:
21 Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.

John 3 Web 10 Jesus answered him, “Are you the teacher of Israel, and don’t understand these things? 11 Most certainly I tell you, we speak that which we know, and testify of that which we have seen, and you don’t receive our witness. 12 If I told you earthly things and you don’t believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13 No one has ascended into heaven, but he who descended out of heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven.14 As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, 15 that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish, but have eternal life.17 For God didn’t send his Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world should be saved through him. 18 He who believes in him is not judged. He who doesn’t believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God.19 This is the judgment, that the light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the light; for their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does evil hates the light, and doesn’t come to the light, lest his works would be exposed. 21 But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his works may be revealed, that they have been done in God.” And keep the commandments in the Bible
