  • Caption this the subtle art of not giving a fuzz. Ok. Fuzzes to give in a day??? It’s gotta be zero. I think a key to happiness and resilience is learning when to force it to zero. Today I received negative feedback about a talk I gave yesterday. A talk I spent a lot of time prepping for but not a lot of time on the slides. It really kind of messed my mood up. I had a great day yesterday with a few professional wins and again had a good morning. That came to a screeching halt when I got this negative feedback. There are so many lessons to reflect on in terms of learning to give and receive feedback. I remembered what I was thinking before the talk, which was that I didn’t really care that much about how it went because I knew I learned a lot in the prep of it and the content of it was good. In reality I did care. So next time I will spend more time on the aesthetics. But why did this bother me so much?? Well. It goes back to a concept my bf (pictured here) learned in B-school. People want to be heard, to contribute and to be acknowledged for their contributions. As a resident, I strive everyday to go above and beyond to learn more and do more for patients. As a pathologist, we don’t interact much with patients, so we don’t get acknowledgement on that front. And as residents at Stanford, we are all above-and-beyonders-by-nature, so your efforts are rarely acknowledged. Thus when somebody takes the time to give negative feedback on the one time you didn’t give it your best effort, it hurts a lot! Now it’s my turn- I should’ve said thanks to my faculty for giving me feedback. Then I should’ve let it go instead of having it ruin my afternoon. Whelp. Learning something new everyday. #physicianwellness #wellness #resilience #resilienceinmedicine #residentwellness #feedback #bschool #acknowledge #stanfordmedicine #stanford #residency #gratitude #growthmindset
