  • Β© Two small documents which arrived in this morning’s post. The little printed 18th century document has beautiful little butterflies or exotic insects on it, so although rather shabby, we just had to have it! The white piece is 19th century hand quilted cotton. Sometimes it is easy to mistake early machine made quilting as hand work, but I’m pretty sure that this IS hand done. The fabric on the reverse is a much looser weave as was used for trapunto work and fine ProvenΓ§al quilting. The looser woven cloth was teased open, the cotton cording or wadding was inserted in the finely stitched channels, and then gently teased back!!! It is incredible work. Looking at the back of this piece one is reminded of early woven huckabuck (or huckaback), making it even more difficult to decide definitely..... #handmade #quilting #quilted #whitework #white #indienne #butterflies #insects #christophermooretextilearchive #fabric #textiles @harvirsonu www.thetoileman.com

  • 𝘚𝘀𝘒𝘡𝘩𝘰𝘱𝘩𝘒𝘨𝘒 𝘴𝘡𝘦𝘳𝘀𝘰𝘳𝘒𝘳π˜ͺ𝘒; a male yellow dung fly. Nice. Named that because they lay their eggs on dung of cows. The adult fly mainly predates smaller insects but will eat nectar too. I photographed this one at dawn near Swanpool, Cornwall one foggy morning before it has shaken off the morning dew and woken up.
