  • After 10 months of doctor appointments, we have a diagnosis...the signs had been pointing in this direction for awhile, but this week we saw a genetic ophthalmologist who confirmed it. Ocular albinism. Something I had never heard of until last year. Avery does not have pigment in her retinas, and because pigment is essential for normal eye development, the structure of the eye that is responsible for seeing fine detail did not develop properly. This makes things like recognizing faces difficult and is not correctable with glasses or contacts. And while it will slightly improve as she grows, Avery will always have poor vision. This is why her eyes constantly shake - her brain is looking for a clear image that just never comes. However, we are so relieved that her nystagmus does not have a neurological cause and she is developing normally 🙏🏻 It is amazing to see her adapt, positioning herself close to books and toys and getting around to see what she wants to see. While her life may be different than most, and certainly not what we expected, we are OK with that and so grateful for this strong amazing little love 💕 #nystagmusbaby #ocularalbinism #nystagmusawareness #babygirl #visuallyimpaired #myheart #americannystagmusnetwork
