- “Not invited.” In elementary school and middle school, being expressly not invited to something was really painful for me. Believe it or not, I was a weird, nerdy kid lol. I’ve long since embraced my Loony Luna Lovegood self, and don’t worry if I’m “not invited.” All this to say, I thought it was kind of a funny way to word a rejection letter, and it gave me a little walk down memory lane, and made me realize in a tangible way how my inner landscape has grown since I was an awkward little kid who wanted to be “popular.” And in terms of my artmaking, I don’t feel bad about my work for not getting selected, or invited, rather. There was a time when I would have felt so bad about something like this. Now I’m just like, ah well, if not this, then something else. And I’m going to keep making the work that sparks my joy. Like one of my VCFA advisors, Mike Cloud, said: Get to work on that 5000 page book and mountain of paintings that someone will find in your garage after you die.
(I told him my dream was for someone to discover a treasure trove of my work, a la Henry Darger, after I die. My advisor wasn’t being morbid about my prospects as an artist while I live lol.) Also, to anyone I know who DID get in: congratulations! ^.^ I’m glad you were invited! .

- Tonight, I met the nicest lady @hobbylobby and then again @michaelsstores - we had a good laugh seeing each other twice. ☺️
It was fun talking with her about art. She is also a painter but doesn’t feel like she knows what she‘s doing most of the time. I told her that as long as you enjoy it, you’re doing something right.
That’s the beauty of art, you can make your own rules; there is no wrong answer. Or, in the words of my new collection, it’s not always black and white.
So, I’m reminding you, and myself, to keep doin’ what makes you happy. Don’t overthink it, and don’t let the *rules* stop you. 😉🖤
