  • I read somewhere once, that when we miss somebody, especially if it appears to come out of nowhere, that we should honour it. This is because they are guests of our heart. But what happens when it isn’t loving or positive? What do we do about those thoughts that keep racing; the bad memories that replay over and over, and the sinking feelings that keep returning?

    I have realised that if I think about a bad memory deeply enough, I can experience the exact same feelings I felt at that time. The problem is, I don’t always have control over how deeply I’m thinking about something.

    Which means something as simple as a phrase or a photo can bring up such awful confusion, pain, frustration, anger or hurt. At first I thought there was something deeply wrong with me. And sometimes it is extremely difficult for me to deal with. But over time I have learnt that the resurfacing of emotions and the replaying of memories offers me the chance to re-evaluate situations, extract lessons and meaning and possibly most important of all, to attach new values and meaning to them.

    There are so many quotes flying around on the internet about how one day we will be grateful for every situation that led us to where we reach in the end. I’ve always felt like that means at the end of our lives, everything will make sense. But actually, I think the reflecting and appreciation of our experiences both positive and negative, ought to be done on a continual basis as we swim through life.
