The yellow deposits made of fatty protein seen in this image, called drusen, are found in the macula – a vital part of the retina. The macula is responsible for seeing details of objects clearly, like faces and written text. The presence of drusen is known to increase the risk of developing Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD), an eye condition in which the macula is damaged. Studies show age as a factor for increasing presence of drusen. It can lead to significant visual loss if the central region of the macula if affected. Learn more about AMD at http://aao.org/amd.
