  • [Ganymede] was loveliest born of the race of mortals, and therefore
the gods caught him away to themselves, to be Zeus' wine-pourer,
for the sake of his beauty, so he might be among the immortals. — Homer, Iliad, Book XX, lines 233-235

  • I'd like to re-read #TheIliad and #TheOdyssey someday! I'd also like to finish #TheAeneid since we only got through half of it in high school.

  • I’m super excited about this book, For the Most Beautiful by Emily Hauser. It’s a retelling of the Iliad, from the women’s point of view. I love retellings and I love the Iliad so this should be the perfect book for me!

For this post I need to thank the amazing @thefictionfaery both for the photo inspiration, and for talking me into buying this sweater😍😂

  • More re-imagining...
We’ve been telling the same story for centuries - power, love, revenge, possession, freedom...
Sianna Sherman once offered that we are each all characters in a story. Some moments we live as one, others as another, but we see ourselves mirrored in the stories we tell.
Each perspective, each re-telling creates a new experience.
Take the Trojan War, in this case, and reimagine it...In Barker’s case, her novel is supposed to represent the female side of the story, which it mostly does. She initially lost me when she abruptly switches into narrating from a male perspective but then I realized it was part of her argument about someone having/not having autonomy over their own narrative and I got back on board.
In Netflix’s case, we are replacing the flicker of the hearth with the flicker of the television screen, but the epic is still being shared. You can change the medium but the message is still there, all these years later...
