  • What is ALICAS? 🤔

I have written a lot about @alicaslove before, but this month, for the first time, I was able to actually put a capsule wardrobe box together myself, and it added even more respect for what ALICAS founder @rachaelbews does every day - use fashion to empower women in crisis.
    .
Inside this box were 20 hand picked items to suit the size, style and culture of the anonymous woman referred to Rachael (this woman could be homeless, a refugee or fleeing domestic abuse), as well as essential basics like pants, socks and tights, plus period products from @heygirlsuk, and a handwritten note of solidarity and support. This woman needs clothing that is tailored to her, so that she can maintain her dignity and confidence in recovery from her trauma - many women fleeing abusive partners find themselvves at women’s shelters with only the clothes on their back, and are sometimes offered bin bags stuffed with poor quality and ill fitting clothing; but we all know that feeling good in what we wear can make our tough days just that bit easier.

ALICAS stands for ‘Ali’s coats and shoes’, because of an incredible survivor called Ali claimed that a great coat and a good pair of shoes got her through the worst of a crisis by allowing her to maintain her self esteem when picking her kids up for school each day, and searching for jobs and homes. We take fashion for granted; but in these situations, it is fundamental.

Thank you, @alicaslove, for welcoming a group of bloggers to your space in Edinburgh to take part in this meaningful experience, alongside embracing the circular economy by swapping and donating our clothes rather than sending them to landfill.

Fast fashion - the brisk selling of cheap, trendy clothes - has resulted in a throw away culture.we buy 5 times as much clothing as we did in the 1980's, and we dump around 300,000 tonnes in the UK each year according to wrap, the waste charity. Jean's are one of the few items we tend to keep for a long time, but their environmental toll is significant. We use huge amounts of water and chemicals to make them, though steps are now being taken to mitigate the impact. But with 2 billion Jean's produced annually worldwide, it's going to take a large scale sustained effort to make a meaningful change.
We only do slow fashion here at totally buggin. Vintage denim pieces, upcycled by hand. Hours of work goes into each piece hopefully transforming it into something special that you can keep for years to come.

  • Feeling a little Tonks-like this morning. Also the hood on my sweatshirt makes me feel like my DnD character Fred [Fred isn’t his real name he’s a gay elven prince exiled by his father and disguised as a bard, with tattoos on his face and half of a skull worn as a mask. Lol I’m sure you all really needed to know that okay DnD tangent over] (Swipe for the real-life comfy-clothes version and unfiltered sloppy makeup close-ups 😆💜) okayyy now back to housework and then resting

  • #thoughtfulthursday post! Today we are excited to share the book “Women in Clothes”. Conceived and edited by Sheila Heti, Hedi Julavits, and Leanne Shapton, this book is a brilliant and unique exploration of the questions we ask ourselves while getting dressed everyday and the answers from more than six hundred women.
Was there a time in your life when your style changed dramatically?
Do you address anything political in the way you dress?
What are some things you admire about how women present themselves?
This is a excellent read, the conversations span among women of all nationalities- famous, anonymous, religious, secular, married, single, young, old. How do the garments you put on everyday shape your life? You can find a copy in the Calgary library📚

  • " Improving the social and environmental impact of the #fashionindustry isn’t easy. Standards and certifications are important tools, but at present, they don’t hold all the answers. It is important for each brand, manufacturer, and consumer to educate themselves around the role standards and certifications play to do their part to move the needle in the global fashion industry. Without the right questions, we won’t get the right answers. " #whomademyclothes ??

Certifications are important once you can't claim to be something without the chance to prove it.
