Marines look over at the horizon of a small volcanic island of Iwo Jima. During the first wave of landing craft to assault the island.

Victory was never in doubt. Its cost was,” said Maj. Gen. Graves B. Erskine in dedicating the Marine Corps Cemetery on the island in 1945. “What was in doubt, in all our minds, was whether there would be any of us left … at the end, or whether the last Marine would die knocking out the last Japanese gun and gunner.” Iwo Jima remains the most costly battle in the history of the U.S. Marine Corps (one-third of all Marines killed in World War II died there), and one of the costliest for America.

“The black ash that inundated the island was suitable for a superior quality of concrete, and the resulting caves, bunkers, pillboxes and large rooms were elaborate. Up to one quarter of the entire garrison was enlisted in the tunneling, and while some of the caves were suitable for two to three men with gear, others could hold up to 400, with multiple entrances and exits to prevent forces from becoming trapped. Ventilation systems were engineered to contend with the danger of sulfur fumes common to the island. On Mount Suribachi itself, the 60 foot-deep crater with a 20 foot ledge on which one could walk the entire circumference of the rim was particularly well-developed as a fortress. The Japanese had constructed elaborate caves all the way around the crater, and according to one of the 28th Marines who took the summit, “It was down in the crater that the Japanese were honey-combed”

27 Medal of Honors were giving for the gallantry and heroic actions that happened on Iwo Jima. Iwo Jima would go down as having the most Medal Of Honor recipients in one battle then any of the battle of American military history. The battle raged on for 36 days. 20,000 Japanese defended the island and only 215 were taken prisoner. Around 18,000 were killed or committed suicide.

  • "~ The first american geologist, Florence Bascom ~ . | Florence Bascom (1862—1945) was an educator and geological survey scientist who is considered to be the first American woman geologist. | Bascom earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Wisconsin, and she later received the first Ph.D. awarded to a woman at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore (1893). Bascom then taught at Ohio State University (1893–95) before going to Bryn Mawr College, where she founded the department of geology; under her direction, it gained a national reputation. From 1896 to 1908, she was also associate editor of the American Geologist. | In 1896 Bascom was named assistant geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey—the first woman ever to receive that appointment. Her work on the Mid-Atlantic Piedmont region led to the contributions for which she is best known—U.S. Geological Survey Folios on Philadelphia (1909), Trenton (1909), Elkton-Wilmington (1920), Quakertown-Doylestown (1931), and Honeybrook-Phoenixville (1938). Bascom also wrote some 40 scientific articles on genetic petrography, geomorphology, and gravel"

  • American Soldiers from the 9th Army seen inspecting a handful of captured German weapons. The soldier in the foreground is examining an STG 44, the first assault rifle. Resting on the brick wall, is the deadly MG 42. In the background we can even see an MP40. Germany, November 25, 1944.
