After yesterday’s post today let’s discuss ENERGY BALANCE (EB) & quote a sickening segment from a paper by Hill et.al., (2012)

The 3 main components of EB include energy in (EI), energy out (EO) & energy storage. Weight can only change when EI is more/less than EO over a chronic period of time. EI comes from food/drink ie. PRO, CHO, FAT & alcohol vs EO which comes from resting metabolic rate (RMR), thermic effect of food (TEF) & energy expended through both FORMAL & informal activity eg. Lifting/NEAT

The more LBM & fat you have the higher your RMR will be. Similarly the more you eat, the higher your total TEF will be & finally, the more active you are (NEAT & formal activity) the more energy you will expend thus considered the largest variable component of energy expenditure. When EI=EO the body is in energy balance & body weight remains stable. When EI>EO a state of positive EB occurs & the consequence is an increase in weight, 60-80% of which is usually fat. Conversely, when EO>EI, a state of negative EB arises & the consequence is a loss of weight (again with 60-80% from fat)

A person who is very physically active may maintain their weight by eating & expending 3000kcal/day. That same person if adopting a sedentary lifestyle, could maintain the SAME weight by eating & expending 2000kcal/day. However if that sedentary person failed to sufficiently reduce EI to match a reduced EO, over time, they would gain weight as they’d be in a 1000kcal surplus

CONCLUSION: CALORIES matter! I know that in terms of “gym”, there are many variables that can influence gaining/preserving muscle, gaining/losing fat etc. such as PRO intake (Helms et al 2013), lifting (Bryner et al 1999), supplementation (Kreider et al 2003) etc.  however it’s clear that everything still all comes down to CALORIES. In a surplus you’re going to GAIN both muscle & fat, in a deficit you’re going to LOSE both muscle & fat thus, if you’re looking to alter your body comp the 1st step is to track CALORIES, then worry about macros>micros>timing>supplements
